EatWild Courses

Learn to hunt, fish and gather food. Have fun and join a community of hunters, foodies and outdoor people.

Let EatWild introduce you to hunting. At EatWild we believe that hunting is about respecting our food and where it comes from, understanding nature, and experiencing adventure.

We can teach you to harvest and enjoy BC’s bounty of wild food. With the skills and confidence you can take responsibility for harvesting meat for your family and friends. At EatWild we will teach you all about elk, deer, ducks, and moose, where they live, and how to go about hunting them.

We also offer seasonal food preparation and preservation workshops, to teach you to make the best use of your harvest. Visit us on Instagram and Facebook to learn about our upcoming workshops, seminars, and wild dinners parties.

CORE – Hunter Certification Course

core-vancouver
Hunter Certification Training Course: Conservation Outdoor Recreation Education (CORE). You must have CORE certificate to get your hunting license in BC. Courses are offered monthly. We specialize in offering CORE to folks in Vancouver.

What is the CORE course all about?

Vancouver’s friendly, fun and informative CORE course. Learn to hunt with EatWild. In order to become a hunter, BC residents must complete the Conservation Outdoor Recreation Education Program (CORE). The CORE program provides an overview of the hunting laws, ethics, animal identification, and firearm safety. The EatWild CORE course is offered throughout the year in Vancouver and is run over 14 hours with weeknight and weekend sessions.

You need the Conservation Outdoor Recreation Education (CORE) course to get a hunting licence in BC. Once you finish the curriculum successfully you will apply to the BC Wildlife Federation who will issue you a CORE Certificate. Once you have your CORE Certificate, you can then apply to the Provincial Government for your BC Resident Hunter Number. Once you have been issued your Hunter Number, you can now buy BC Hunting Licenses. You will have your hunter number for life, and you will never have to go through this process again.

What folks are saying about CORE with EatWild

I just wanted to thank you for being a great instructor during the CORE course. It was inspiring to hear not only your stories, but those of your amazing team as well. The extremely high level of passion and dedication you have for hunting was intoxicating. Thank you again.
Let me wrap up with a sincere Thank You for a great CORE course. I actually signed up for the online version of the CORE course almost a year ago, but I couldn't get into it. It wasn't until I saw one of your YouTube videos that I decided to take the course in person, and I'm glad I did! Your stories, and the depth of your experience made the material so much easier to absorb. Much appreciated.
“It’s always best to learn from an experienced hunter, rather than a textbook.”

PAL / CFSC – Canadian Firearms Safety Course

PAL-Vancouver-EatWild
TheCFSC / CRFSC (also known as PAL/RPAL) is an introductory firearm safety course intended for all new firearms users and as a prerequisite for obtaining a Possession and Acquisition Licence (PAL) for Non-restricted firearms. This course provides students with the knowledge of firearm laws and confidence for safe-handling. Our classes provide a relaxed and friendly class atmosphere where beginners won’t feel intimidated.

Join EatWild for a hunter oriented firearms training course. Our PAL / RPAL course is designed to ensure new hunters can build the confidence, knowledge and skills to safely and effectively use firearms.

To ensure that our students meet the full requirements of the Canadian Firearms Program and in accordance our authorization from the RCMP to provide the CFSC / CRFSC, the course consists of 10 hours of classroom training time. The course is offered over one long day which includes the exam.

By successfully completing the PAL, and passing both the written and practical tests, participants will be able to:

  • Handle Non-Restricted (and Restricted) firearms and ammunition safely
  • Use, store and transport Non-Restricted (and Restricted) firearms and ammunition safely and responsibly
  • Apply for a Non-Restricted Firearms Licence (PAL) (and if you do the CRFSC, apply for RPAL as well) having received the required “Safety Training Certification”
  • Complete their BC Hunter Education Course (CORE) without having to take the CORE Practical Firearms Exam
  • Go on to take the Canadian Restricted Firearms Safety Course (CRFSC) (if you did NOT choose a session that already includes the CRFSC)

Most of my hunting and fishing partners are women. Most of my hunting and fishing partners are women. This shouldn’t be weird but it is for some people. From these experiences, I have learned that women deal with a pile bullshit on their journeys to be SEEN as a hunter or a fisher. With work, I am optimistic that more people will see:
• @nolasemczyszyn as the fisher who is my “go-to” for local knowledge for fishing
• @jennyp403 as the hunter who shared her knowledge, secret spot and mentored me on my first bear hunt
• Jody @wildnorthernway for sharing her expertise with me about how to take care of moose meat in the field
• @xenathewarriorprincesswastaken as the captain of her boat that won the fishing derby
• or see successful hunters in front of a meat pole and not find that a confusing picture.
• I could go on... and I want to hear your stories. We have lots more work to do in the community of hunters and fishers. EatWild is committed to building an inclusive and supportive place for women to learn to hunt, fish, and gather wild food.

An exception day of prawn fishing with @_mi.kee. T An exception day of prawn fishing with @_mi.kee. This is Miki’s first time setting the traps, and the best prawning I have had in 15 years. The prawn population is cyclical. Hopefully we will enjoy a few more good pulls, cause Miki may have to brace for 15 years of disappointing sets after this start to the prawn season! Everything is "unprecedented" this past year, including the number of search and rescue calls for people on outdoor adventurers. More people than ever are getting out into our wilderness to take refuge from the challenges that have come with the pandemic. AdventureSmart and Sandra Riches are working to reach folks to help them get prepared for their outdoor adventures so their trip doesn’t result in another call to 911.

An old saying goes...there’s more than one way t An old saying goes...there’s more than one way to skin a moose. I’ll show you a few ways at our EatWild Butchering and Meat Care Webinar on February 23rd at 7 pm pst.

This is an old photo of my late father Bud showing me how to skin and break up a moose into quarters. We were lucky to shoot this moose on the lake shore and we were able to float him back to camp where there was a bobcat for hire. My dad was insistent that we bring these moose quarters to the butcher without a hair or a speck of dirt on them. A carefully planned process will ensure that the meat stays clean from beginning to end. I was so fortunate to have a father who always placed the utmost importance on meat care the field. I’ll share what I have learned over a lifetime of taking care of meat from the field to the table. @ulliekrack #eatwild #moosehunting #wildmeat #meateater #huntbc #huntingbc #sumasmeats
Part 3 of The Pole Bender Adventure We survived 3 Part 3 of The Pole Bender Adventure

We survived 3 days of the storm and then another 5 days of being stuck in the tent waiting for the skies to clear. So that's about 192 hours with 4 guys sharing 36 square feet of real estate. We pulled it off and we are all still friends. Catch up with our crew as we debrief the Pole Bender Adventure. We reflect back on the decisions and the gear that kept us safe. Also, we share another near-disaster story as we make the flight out of the mountains. Lots of good info in this podcast if you are planning an adventure hunt this year.
