Women EatWild EatWild - Mike

Overview

Women EatWild was created to support women who want to hunt, fish, forage and EatWild.

EatWild was created as a place for people to access information about ethical hunting; to learn how to use tools to their advantage and to build skills that will help them become successful hunters. And in our experience, much of the best learning we offer comes from the stories and anecdotes of our instructors, fellow students, and mentors. But we recognize that the stories we tell and the mentors we have access to are largely male. Women EatWild wants to change that narrative, and help tell the story of the growing number of women who are out there hunting, foraging, and fishing. So we created Women EatWild as a resource to foster and develop more women who can serve in our community as role models, instructors, and mentors.

Women EatWild meets for social nights, to plan hunts, and occasional weekend outings. We bring in guest speakers and facilitators, and organize women focused workshops. The group also serves to connect like-minded women across the province and to facilitate new friendships and hunting partnerships. It is a forum to meet other women with similar interests, and to learn together in a non-intimidating, supportive environment.

LEH Hunting Party EatWild - Mike

Event Overview

Many great hunting opportunities are allocated through the Limited Entry Hunting (LEH) draw. Because there is often an excess demand to hunt for specific species (moose), the Province administers a draw in order to give all hunter a fair opportunity to hunt, while limiting the number of animals that get harvested. EatWild will help you understand how the LEH draw works, plan your hunts, and get the most out of the LEH draw. The event will be an opportunity to get the support and guidance to fill out the LEH cards and enter the LEH draw.

This will be an open house event, and EatWilders (you) will get a chance to meet other hunters, enjoy a cold beverage, scheme up hunting adventures, and ask questions about hunting. We will even have a few door prizes this year.

EatWild hunting mentors, Larri, Geoff, Rob, Marshall and Celina will be available to help provide guidance, advice, and a few good stories throughout the workshop. We will help you fill out the LEH cards and enter the LEH draw. I will have LEH cards available for sale. They are about $6 each.  You can enter one card for each species that is listed in the LEH synopsis.

Upcoming Limited Entry Hunting Party Dates

No upcoming dates scheduled for this event. Please sign up for our newsletter in the page footer to be notified.

Overview and Costs

We are being hosted at the Commercial Drive Legion from 7pm to 10pm.  I will conduct a LEH “how it works” presentation at 7pm sharp.  By 8pm we will break out into working groups, and with the support of the mentor team, you will fill out your LEH cards for the draw. There will be lots of room for us to look at maps, socialize, and plan our hunts for the season.   Just remember to take off your hat while in the Legion.  Costs are $10 entry and door prizes,  $6 per LEH card.

Summer isn’t just a great time for fishing, prawning and crabbing. It’s also a great time to preserve your catch. Learn how to can and smoke Sockeye, Pink and Chinook salmon. Trust us– bringing a can of your own salmon to work is *way* better than a tin of the supermarket stuff.

Cliffed out, rained out, blown out and snowed out: Cliffed out, rained out, blown out and snowed out: the pole bender adventure.

In August 2019, I set out with my hunting crew on a caribou hunting adventure in the mountains of the Tahltan Traditional Territory in Northern British Columbia. Idyllic summer days strolling across the mountain tundra spotting caribou and goats, everything was going according to plan. But our plan took an unfortunate turn, and an unseasonably harsh arctic storm front blasted our camp with hurricane-force winds and 3 feet of snow. We went from hunting to surviving. Taking shelter in the tipi tent, we took turns keeping the center pole from snapping as we held down the tent praying for the storm to let up. Join us for this three-part series on the Pole Bender Adventure. These are great episodes if you're planning an adventure trip in the wilderness. We talk about the logistics of planning a fly-in trip, trip safety plans, emergency communications, and a little bit about sneaking up on goats. I hope you enjoy this.

You can find the article by Cleston Lee in the 02/2021 @bcoutdoorsmagazine

Thanks to my crew @breathelightmedia, Clay, and Ryan for this adventure.

Tipi Tuesday! The calm before the storm. Shortly a Tipi Tuesday! The calm before the storm. Shortly after this photo was taken, a storm hit us with 100 kms winds and 3 feet of snow. We were stuck in the tent for 7 days before the pilot could get in and fly us out. The tent saved our lives for sure. We are rolling out a 3 part podcast series this month to tell the story. Stay tuned to the EatWild Podcast. You can also find the story in this month’s @bcoutdoorsmagazine by Clay Armstrong.

In this episode, I am learning about ceremony and In this episode, I am learning about ceremony and ritual from an Indigenous hunter's perspective with my friend La’goot Spencer Greening. La’goot is a Tsimshian leader, storyteller, and academic.

This past hunting season I witnessed a range of ceremonies that hunters practiced after taking the life of an animal. At one end of the spectrum, I overheard what sounded like a new years eve celebration as a couple of nearby hunters got lucky on the road, to being part of Miki's first hunt where her ceremony involved calm moments of contemplation as she processed the experience of taking her first animal.

We start with a question about holding a ceremony after taking an animal’s life and dive deep into a conversation around rituals, that, in some traditions, start a long time before the hunt takes place.

La'goot shares his experience of the role that his community, elders, and mentors play in learning rituals and developing the practice of ceremony. We reflect on how having those connections can help new hunters be more present in their actions and have a mindful experience when faced with taking an animal's life.

This podcast goes in a few more interesting directions. I am grateful for these insightful conversations with La'goot, and I feel fortunate to be able to share them with our listeners.
