This work shop will take place over three days. On the first day we will start the process, using hides that you will have begun soaking a week in advance, scraping the hair layer off the hide, wringing the hides through a tanning solution and beginning to stretch them out. The second day will be full-on hide stretching- keeping the hides supple as they dry to ensure a nice finished product. With luck the hides will be completely dry by the end of the day and we will then sew them up into bags so they will be ready to smoke. On the third day we will smoke the hides, finishing the process and leaving you with a finished product that can be made into bags, moccasins or clothing.
If you are interested in this workshop, please keep your hides! And take care when skinning them- knife mark become weak spots in the finished material! Hides can be folded up and stored in the freezer, or if you are lacking freezer space they can be salted and stored in totes in a cool place. If you are going to salt your hide, Lay hide out flat with the flesh side facing up. Spread salt in a thick layer over the entire surface, all the way out to the edges. Allow the salt to soak in overnight. Fold the hide up and store it in cool place with no air flow, so they won’t dry out. After one week drain any water that has accumulated at the bottom of the container.
